What UV coil lights actually do
A UV coil light is a germicidal lamp mounted inside the air handler, aimed at the indoor coil and drain pan. Those surfaces stay wet for months at a time — in cooling season by design, and in our damp climate more or less perpetually — which makes them prime real estate for mold and bacterial films. Continuous UV exposure keeps that growth from establishing, which protects airflow, keeps the coil's heat transfer honest, and eliminates the musty 'dirty sock' smell some systems develop. What it doesn't meaningfully do is disinfect the air rushing past: at real system airflow, air spends a fraction of a second in the light — far too brief for reliable kill rates. It's a surface treatment, and judged as one, it's genuinely useful.
Filtration: the particle workhorse
For everything you can see in a sunbeam — dust, pollen, pet dander, wildfire smoke — mechanical filtration is the proven answer, and it's covered in depth in our MERV guide. The reason it belongs in this comparison: filters are usually the honest answer to the problem people try to solve with gadgets. Allergy symptoms, smoke infiltration, dusty furniture — all particle problems, all filtration jobs. The upgrade path is a properly rated filter or media cabinet that your blower is verified to handle, with the fan running enough hours to actually turn the house's air over. No purple glow, no plasma — just a dense mat of fibers doing exactly what a century of engineering says it does.
The purifier grab-bag
'Air purifier' covers wildly different machines. Portable HEPA units are the best of the category: genuinely excellent for single rooms, well supported by evidence, and the standard recommendation for bedrooms during smoke events. In-duct electronic air cleaners (ionizers, PCO, plasma and needlepoint devices) are a more mixed story — some capture or deactivate contaminants under lab conditions, but real-home performance varies, some produce ozone as a byproduct, and independent field evidence is thinner than the marketing. Activated carbon is the legitimate tool for odors and gases, but it needs real mass — pounds of carbon in a dedicated cartridge, not a gray dusting on a mesh pre-filter. Our rule: technologies with decades of independent evidence first, novel ones only with data at realistic airflow.
Matching the tool to your actual problem
Start from the complaint, not the catalog. Musty smell when the system starts: likely coil or pan growth — a coil cleaning plus a UV light prevents the rerun. Allergies, dust, smoke sensitivity: filtration first, portable HEPA for the bedroom second. Persistent odors (cooking, pets, that indefinable old-house note): source control and ventilation first, bulk activated carbon second. Damp, musty rooms: that's a humidity and duct-leakage question, not a purifier question at all. A useful test for any recommendation, including ours: the seller should be able to name the specific contaminant the device addresses and explain the mechanism in one sentence. 'It purifies everything' is not a mechanism.

Will a UV light help with wildfire smoke?
No. Smoke is particles, and UV neither captures nor destroys them at any meaningful rate. For smoke you want high-quality filtration — a verified high-MERV or media filter centrally, and portable HEPA units for bedrooms.
Are ozone-generating purifiers safe?
Devices sold as ozone generators for occupied spaces are a firm no — ozone is a lung irritant at the concentrations needed to do anything. Some electronic air cleaners produce trace ozone as a byproduct; if you're considering one, ask for its certified ozone emissions data.
Is a UV light worth adding to my system?
