Is a frozen outdoor unit in winter normal?
A frost coating that clears during periodic defrost cycles is normal (you may see steam — that's the defrost working). Solid ice buildup that never clears, or ice damaging the fan, is a service call. Never chip ice off the coil.
My furnace short-cycles (starts and stops rapidly). Emergency?
Not usually, but stop running it and check the filter first. Persistent short-cycling can mean an overheating limit trip — a safety doing its job — and warrants prompt service.
Do you charge extra for after-hours calls?
