The federal 25C tax credit ended in 2025 — in 2026, the money is in utility rebates and Washington's income-qualified HEAR program. Here's what each utility offers and how we verify yours.

Your rebate depends on three things: which utility serves your address, what you're replacing (electric resistance heat earns the most), and your household income (Washington's HEAR program can cover a large share of cost below 150% of area median income). Washington HEAR (Climate Commitment Act)
Serves: Statewide — income-qualified households (≤150% of Area Median Income)
Washington's Home Electrification and Appliance Rebates program funds heat pump installs for income-qualified households, administered by third parties (United Hub covers Pierce and King County). Equipment must be cold-climate rated (NEEP-listed or ENERGY STAR Cold Climate).
Per the program administrator: up to 100% of qualified project cost below 80% AMI, and 50% between 80–150% AMI. Income verification happens up front — we help you check your tier.

Serves: Unincorporated Pierce County incl. Graham & Spanaway (income-qualified)
Pierce County Human Services administers weatherization and HEAR-funded heat pump installs (including electrical panel upgrades) for income-qualified households outside Tacoma city limits — exactly the Graham/Spanaway communities we're based in.
Funding levels depend on household income and program cycle — we'll point you to the county application and handle the equipment side.

PSE runs residential heat pump rebates weighted toward replacing electric resistance heat, with larger income-qualified tiers and gas-to-heat-pump conversion incentives. From April 2026 PSE requires installs through registered Trade Ally contractors to qualify.

PenLight publishes some of the region's most structured heat pump incentives, tiered by what you're replacing: $1,000 for ductless systems, $1,200 for an air-source heat pump replacing an electric forced-air furnace, $1,700 for a variable-speed model, and $600 for variable-speed upgrades from gas, oil, or older heat pumps. Income-qualified installs can reach $9,000 (ducted) / $6,000 (ductless) with pre-approval. Minimums: HSPF2 ≥ 7.5, SEER2 ≥ 14.3, AHRI certificate required.

Is the federal heat pump tax credit still available in 2026?
No. The federal Section 25C credit ended December 31, 2025. In 2026, heat pump incentives in Washington come from utility rebate programs and the state's Climate Commitment Act-funded HEAR program for income-qualified households — which is exactly why verifying your utility's current program matters before you sign anything.
How do I know which utility serves my home?
In our service area it depends on your address: Tacoma Power inside Tacoma, PSE across much of Federal Way, Kent, Auburn, and Puyallup, Lakeview Light & Power in Lakewood, Parkland Light & Water around Parkland/Spanaway, Ohop Mutual toward Eatonville, and PenLight on the Gig Harbor peninsula. Can rebates be combined (stacked)?
Often, yes — Washington's income-qualified HEAR funding can stack with utility rebates, which is where the biggest savings live. Stacking rules, income tiers, and pre-approval steps vary by program, so we map it for your household as part of the estimate.
